Thomas Park에서 국내 최초로 브루스 가니에의 개인전을 연다. 뉴욕에서 활동하는 작가 브루스 가니에(b.1941, 미국)는 평생 인체를 모티프로 하는 조각 작업에 몰두해왔다. 쟈코메티의 후손이라 일컬어지는 가니에의 인체는 이상적인 모습과는 거리가 멀다. 종종 상처나고 주름지고 두들겨 맞은 듯 거친 표면을 하고, 그 포즈 또한 금방이라도 쓰러질 듯 불안하고 어색해 보이는 경우가 대부분이다. 모델 없이 주로 기억과 상상으로 작업하는 가니에는 이 모든 인체들이 결국 자기 자신의 초상이라고 말한다. 이 말은 때로 기괴해 보이기까지 하는 그의 형태와 표면에 대한 부분적인 설명을 제공하는 동시에 그의 ‘검소한’ 취향의 일면을 보여준다. 그의 조각은 시공과 정체를 초월한, 그러나 구체적이고 실존적 인간의 모습으로 이는 분명 자화상이 확대되고 깊어진 양상이라 할 수 있을 것이다.

이번 전시 는 가니에의 방법론에 결정적인 역할을 한 연작들을 선보인다. 그의 인체 조각의 표면은 때로 그로테스크할 정도로 거친데, 그는 정작 표면에는 관심이 없다고 말한다. 가니에는 종종 그의 작업을 두고 ‘내부에서 밖으로 나가는’ 작업이라고 말하는데, 이는 그의 작업 철학은 물론 그의 방법론까지 포함한다. 그는 도예가들이 흙덩어리를 안쪽에서 만져 전체 양감을 부풀려 나가는 과정에서 영감을 받아 이 마스크 연작을 시작하게 되었다고 말한다. 그는 도예가들처럼 흙덩어리 안쪽에서 바깥쪽으로 작업하여 양감을 만들었고, 이러한 작업 과정에서 얻은 자유로 전통적인 두상이 가지는 훌륭하고도 엄격한 형태에서 벗어날 수 있었다. 마스크는 얼굴을 가리는 가면이고, 표면을 덮는 다른 표면일 뿐인데, 가니에의 마스크는 어딘가 내부를 연상시킨다. 외부는 내부의 드러남이라는 명제가 진지하고도 감각적으로 형상화된 역작이라 할 수 있다.

1941년 메사추세츠 월리엄스타운 출생인 브루스 가니에는 Skowhegan school of Painting and Sculpture와 Columbia University에서 수학하였고, 1976년 Haverford College 에서 첫 개인전을 연 이후 M-13 Gallery, Leslie Cecil Gallery, Lori Bookstein Fine Art 등 뉴욕에서 다수의 개인전과 그룹전을 가졌다. 2014년 Newly Elected Members and Recipients of Honors and Awards에서 수상하였다. Yale University, Sarah Lawrence College, Parsons School of Design, New York Studio School 등에서 다년간 가르쳤다. 현재 뉴욕 브루클린에서 거주하며 작업하고 있다.
